The first page of Beethoven’s score bears the words, From the heart – may it go to the heart, and if ever a work came from the heart, it is this. Whether in music of sublime awe-inspiring grandeur, of glowing beauty and touching humility, or of intoxicating joy, Beethoven sought to give the deepest internal expression to every word, creating a very personal interpretation of the mass text.
Taking on the challenge of this dramatic work are the combined forces of the Festival Chorus, made up of singers from all over East Anglia, who come together every Festival to perform in the glorious setting of King’s Chapel. This year, internationally renowned composer and conductor Stephen Cleobury directs the choir, supported by the East Anglia Chamber Orchestra. A quartet of top-class soloists complete the line-up.
